Irrigation pipe procurement is a balance between hydraulic performance, installation practicality and total delivered cost. The same project may require a pressure-rated mainline, smaller flexible branch lines and short rigid sections around pumps or equipment. A single product description such as “PE irrigation pipe” is not enough for an accurate quotation.
The buyer should define where the pipe will be installed, how much water it must carry and what pressure it may experience. The supplier can then coordinate suitable material, diameter, wall thickness, length and packing options with selected production partners.

Pressure, SDR and Wall Thickness
Irrigation systems can experience pressure changes when pumps start, zones open or valves close. The quotation should therefore be based on the expected operating pressure and the maximum design condition, not only the normal reading at the pump.
For PE pipe, SDR and PN are commonly used to describe geometry and pressure class. Buyers should avoid comparing two quotations that use the same nominal diameter but different SDR values. A thinner wall may reduce price and weight, but it also changes pressure capability and installation robustness.
Non-pressure drainage or open-channel transfer requirements should be identified separately. A pressure-rated specification may be unnecessary for some gravity applications, while a light non-pressure pipe may be unsuitable for a pumped mainline.
Diameter and Flow Planning
Pipe diameter affects both flow capacity and pressure loss. Long agricultural routes can magnify friction losses, especially when multiple zones operate at the same time. Provide the supplier with the target flow, route length and elevation change whenever possible.
For a multi-size order, list the quantity by diameter instead of providing only the total project length. This allows accurate material calculation, packing and container planning.
Outdoor Exposure and Installation
Outdoor irrigation pipe may face sunlight, heat, cold, fertilizer contact, dragging, machinery traffic and seasonal storage. Buyers should describe these conditions clearly. Useful information includes:
- Above-ground or buried installation
- Expected years of outdoor exposure
- Soil and backfill condition
- Vehicle or equipment crossings
- Water temperature and water quality
- Fertilizer or chemical contact
- Required stripe color or identification marking
- Local test or tender requirements
Where the pipe will be stored before installation, confirm whether coils or bundles need UV-protective covering and how long the storage period may be.
Packing and Shipment Decisions
Coils can reduce the number of joints and speed up field installation, but large coils require suitable handling space. Straight lengths can be easier to stack and count but may use container space differently. The best packing format depends on diameter, stiffness, order mix and unloading equipment.
Request labels that show product name, size, wall thickness or SDR, length, batch or order reference and quantity. For mixed-container orders, ask for a loading plan that separates sizes and protects smaller coils from deformation.
